Description

JAV 103 — Great Organ Builders, Volume 3 — Walter Hilse

The remarkable Opus 985 at Columbia University, built in 1939, is among those instruments considered G. Donald Harrison’s best, more closely following the Werkprinzip pitch structure than any of his previous instruments. A rousing performance of Bach’s Dorian Toccata and tenderly played of his trio on Allein Gott display the instrument’s Baroque qualities, yet this organ has bombast, as evidenced in the thundering "Allegro in Bb" by Mendelssohn. Two interesting, jazz-influenced works by Hilse — "In Memoriam Duke Ellington" and "Fugue in G" - demonstrate his considerable skill as a composer.
